Search Intensifies for Missing British Journalist Charlotte Peet

Search Intensifies for Missing British Journalist Charlotte Peet
  • PublishedFebruary 19, 2025

Charlotte Peet, a 32-year-old British freelance journalist known for her work with notable media outlets such as The Telegraph and The Evening Standard, has been missing in Brazil for over a week, raising concerns among family and colleagues alike. According to Brazilian authorities and the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents (ACIE), the journalist was last heard from on February 8, when she reached out to a friend via WhatsApp, seeking accommodation in Rio de Janeiro after reportedly being in São Paulo.

Peet’s family, unaware of her plans to return to Brazil, expressed concern after losing contact with her. Her father, Derek Peet, revealed that the family traced her journey back to Brazil through airport records, not knowing she had left London until then. “There was something on her mind, obviously,” he poignantly remarked, highlighting the unusual nature of her sudden return to Brazil without informing them.

The ACIE is advocating for authorities to hasten their search efforts, stating that Peet had been an active freelance correspondent in Brazil for over two years. Her work spanned critical topics, including human rights and crime, and she was noted for her fluency in Portuguese, which undoubtedly aided her reporting in the country.

Charlotte Peet’s disappearance places a spotlight on the risks faced by journalists, particularly those working in conflict zones or countries with complex political climates. Reports from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) indicate that violence against media personnel remains a significant issue in Brazil. In recent years, the nation has experienced a rise in targeted attacks against journalists, complicating their efforts to report freely and safely.

As family and friends await updates, the global journalistic community is rallying to bring attention to Charlotte’s case, underscoring the critical nature of journalist safety and the necessity for accountability in the search and rescue of missing individuals in the field.
