Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock Conjure Magic in First Look at Practical Magic 2

Oh, this should be good. Hollywood has decided that bringing back witches from 1998 is the next big thing. In a bid to recapture some of that late-90s charm, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock have dusted off their broomsticks for Practical Magic 2. The duo reprised their roles as Gillian “Gilly” Owen and Sally Owen in a sneak preview video that landed on Instagram on July 18.
The teaser shows Kidman, sporting Gilly’s fiery red locks and a maroon lace maxi dress, embracing Bullock in what appears to be a cemetery scene. Bullock looks equally on point as Sally—her hair half-up, donning a brown-and-white patterned frock—laughing and patting her co-star on the back. It is exactly the moment fans have been craving if social media reactions are any indication.
“The witches are back,” Kidman, 58, captioned the clip, making sure we all know this reunion was worth the wait. Bullock, now 60, returned the smile without missing a beat. Their on-screen chemistry remains just as electric as it was when the original Practical Magic hit theaters.
Warner Bros. first confirmed that a sequel was in the works back in June 2024, teasing Practical Magic 2 on Instagram and promising something “coming soon.” The new installment draws inspiration from Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel series and carries much of the original creative team. Kidman and Bullock aren’t just acting—they’re also producing.
Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the screenplay on the first film alongside Robin Swicord and Adam Brooks, is back to sketch out the sequel’s storyline. Original producer Denise Di Novi also signed on, ensuring at least some continuity behind the camera. Plot details remain as hidden as a witch’s spell book, but director Griffin Dunne hinted last year to Vanity Fair that he wants to update the story for today’s climate and sensibilities.
The sisters’ partnership began back in 1998 when Bullock, already a Hollywood heavyweight after While You Were Sleeping, suggested Nicole Kidman for the wild-child role on the DVD commentary. “Nicole Kidman seems like the perfect person,” Bullock said, citing their opposite energies. Kidman later admitted she was thrilled to finally work with another woman after years of male leads.
On set, Dunne reported that the pair acted just like siblings—fighting one moment, cracking the same joke the next. He even hired a practicing witch as a consultant, only for her to demand a hefty fee and a cut of the box office. When the studio balked, she supposedly sued Warner Bros. and left a chilling voicemail full of curses.
Production is now officially underway, and fans are already marking their calendars. Will Practical Magic 2 capture lightning in a bottle or fizzle like a dud potion? Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes spells and secrets. And that’s today’s dose of reality. You’re welcome.
