Inside the Long-Delayed Wedding Crashers Sequel and Why It’s Still on Hold

Inside the Long-Delayed Wedding Crashers Sequel and Why It’s Still on Hold
  • PublishedJuly 15, 2025

Here’s the lowdown on why Wedding Crashers 2 still hasn’t materialized: cinematographer Julio Macat revealed in a recent Collider interview that script delays and scheduling conflicts have repeatedly stalled the project. Macat, who lens-crafted the original 2005 hit, said the creative team wants to honor the comedy’s unexpected charm before greenlighting any follow-up.

Macat explained that the sequel’s story has gone through numerous rewrites as writers strive to recapture that perfect blend of raunchy humor and heartfelt moments that made the first film a surprise box office success. “We’ve been careful not to rush it,” Macat told Collider, adding that the central duo—Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson—remain enthusiastic but are tied up with other commitments. According to Variety, both stars have expressed eagerness to revisit their roles in promotional interviews, yet conflicting calendars have prevented them from committing to a shoot date.

The original Wedding Crashers exceeded expectations, grossing over 200 million dollars worldwide and cementing itself as a mid-aughts comedy favorite. Fans have clamored for a sequel ever since, and rumors buzzed again when Vaughn mentioned potential talks in a 2022 People magazine feature. Sources close to the production told Variety that several drafts leaned into new characters but ultimately felt off-brand, prompting fresh takes from veteran scribes.

Industry insiders say the pandemic only deepened the delay, forcing virtual writers’ rooms that struggled to capture the chemistry that Macat achieved on-set with real-time improvisation. In his Collider feature, Macat noted that rehearsals were as crucial as camera setups, and trying to replicate that energy over Zoom simply didn’t work. Now that studios have returned to normal operations, the film’s producers are revisiting earlier scripts and exploring a streamlined schedule that could finally align cast availability.

Beyond logistical hurdles, there’s also pressure to meet fan expectations. Macat stressed that a sequel without the original spark would do more harm than good. “We all want to crash weddings again, but only if it feels organic,” he said. People magazine reports that an early draft focused on new wedding targets in Europe, while a later version considered sending the duo on a bachelor party-gone-awry adventure. Neither concept has moved forward yet.

With talks reportedly back on track, insiders tell Collider that a finalized script could surface later this year and a production announcement may follow in early 2025. Until then, Macat and the filmmakers prefer quality over speed, determined to preserve what made Wedding Crashers such a cultural touchstone.

And there you have it. Keep your RSVP ready.
