Jake Paul Cruises to Unanimous Decision Over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Jake Paul Cruises to Unanimous Decision Over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
  • PublishedJune 29, 2025

So apparently it’s still a thing: Jake Paul trading blows with a former world champ while ticket-buyers question their life choices. I hate to say “I told you so,” but the Anaheim crowd at the Honda Center got served a master class in polite dominance rather than a firefight. On June 28, social-media’s favorite self-promoter, 28-year-old Jake Paul, strolled through the early rounds against 39-year-old Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. — and yes, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, Chavez Jr. spent most of the opening stanza complaining to the ref instead of planting punches.

Right out of the gate, Paul peppered Chavez Jr. with jabs and crosses, piling up rounds while the audience chimed in with disgruntled boos. Commentators from DAZN pointed out that the former WBC middleweight titlist looked less like a contender and more like a man wondering if he remembered how to fight. By Round 3, Chavez Jr. had thrown so few meaningful shots that you’d think the ref had warned him off.

Trouble really started for Chavez Jr. when he claimed low blows and rabbit-punches, but the official saw none of it. Paul, unfazed, kept the pressure on until Round 6, when – surprise surprise – Chavez finally decided to wake up. That late surge saw a few clean connections land on Paul, forcing him into clinches to buy time. Still, it was way too little, way too late.

Judges didn’t flinch: the scorecards read 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93 in Paul’s favor. His record bumps to 12-1, adding another notch to his “YouTube star turned pugilist” resume. Post-fight, Paul told the crowd to “shut the f*** up” — charming, right? But he also took a moment to send prayers to Ben Askren, pledging with brother Logan to cover medical bills as the ex-fighter battles severe pneumonia. Points for goodwill.

What’s next for Paul? He name-checked heavy hitters like Anthony Joshua, Gervonta “Tank” Davis and Tommy Fury, though everyone outside the ring is raising an eyebrow at whether this spectacle is boxing or a fancy sideshow. Expect more hype, more social-media stunts, and, naturally, more “grudge” match talk to keep pay-per-view numbers climbing.

And that, dear reader, is why we can’t have nice things.
