Jon Jones Drops the Gloves for Good: UFC Legend Officially Retires

Jon Jones Drops the Gloves for Good: UFC Legend Officially Retires
  • PublishedJune 21, 2025

Casual swipe into MMA headlines took a hard turn when UFC chief Dana White confirmed that Jon Jones is hanging up his gloves for good. In a call straight out of left field, Jones rang up the promotion last Friday to drop the retirement bomb, making official what fans and pundits had endlessly speculated about. According to TMZ and a follow-up from ESPN, White didn’t sugarcoat it: “Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired.”

Jones, 37, wraps a historic 28-1 run with a résumé that reads like an all-time great highlight reel. He first stepped into the Octagon back in August 2008 at UFC 87, outpointing Andre Gusmao in a unanimous decision. Fast-forward three years, and he shattered records by becoming the youngest UFC champion ever at just 23 years old, knocking out Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128. Over the next decade and a half, he carved out a reputation as arguably the sport’s most dominant force, defending his light heavyweight crown a staggering eight times.

This past November, Jones made his second tilt at heavyweight and added another fall-guy to his list, edging out Stipe Miocic in a razor-tight decision. His first heavyweight title win came in March 2023 with a one-round blitz of Ciryl Gane. With that 205-to-265-pound jump looking like a mere speed bump, he was primed for a blockbuster unification bout with interim champ Tom Aspinall. But Jones was never shy about questioning Aspinall’s credentials, telling reporters he hadn’t done enough to earn the shot.

Now, with Queensbury’s own Aspinall elevated to undisputed champion status, the heavyweight division shifts gears. Jones’s call to retire means the pugilistic chessboard is wide open—will Aspinall face fresh contenders or lure Jones back for a farewell rematch? And what does this mean for a fighter whose lone blemish was a disqualification in 2015, a loss he vehemently disputes?

Beyond the stats and record books, Jones’s impact on MMA culture is undeniable. He helped legitimize modern training camps, sparked debates over PED policies and held fans in rapt attention every time the Octagon door clanged shut. His retirement announcement feels like the closing of a heavyweight chapter in UFC history—and maybe the prelude to a new era.

Ultimately, the sport moves forward without its poster boy. Veterans will tip their hats. New challengers will rise. And somewhere in Abu Dhabi or Las Vegas, fight night won’t quite feel the same. Anyway, that’s the deal. Do with it what you will.
